Steak, mushroom, tomato and greens on a plate from the Merchant Steakhouse

The Merchant Steakhouse

A new steakhouse has opened its doors in Glasgow! The Merchant Steakhouse can be found in the Merchant City and markets itself as a restaurant perfect for special occasions, although you’re obviously more than welcome to visit if you’re craving steak on a random Tuesday.

They promise each and every customer an “unforgettable meal” with attentive service and a range of premium cuts of meat in a stylish setting. I was lucky enough to visit The Merchant Steakhouse on its launch night to see if this truly was the case.

Walking in, the restaurant isn’t too big and has a super cosy feel to it. Upon entering, there is a stylish bar and to the right, all the tables which are looked over by a large neon sign that helps light up the room. There is also a downstairs area too with extra seating.

We started the night off with cocktails and nibbles. Because it was a launch night event, I didn’t get to choose the cocktail and to be quite honest I’m not exactly sure what was in my one. It tasted like a cherry and whisky concoction of some sort and went down a treat.

The nibbles we chose were the toasted sourdough and the salt & chilli popcorn. The bread was bloody delicious and came with a herby, garlicky butter. The popcorn was also a nice wee snack and tasted nice but it was quite wet to the touch, especially the further you got through it, so that was a little off-putting. Not enough to make deter me from eating it though because the flavour was there.

For the steaks, I went for the 28-day aged sirloin with chimichurri. I didn’t get any photos for proof so you’ll need to take my word that it cooked to perfection and just melted in your mouth. I’d say it’s the best steak I’ve had in Glasgow by far! It’s probably up there with being one of the best in Scotland but that’s a bold statement…

The chimichurri which came on the side was a great accompaniment to the steak as it was fresh and vibrant — it definitely livened the plate up! The steak also came with a tomato, mushroom and a simple garnish. This dish was the star of the show, as it should be, but the sides we ordered also deserve some recognition…

We shared the whipped butter potatoes, buttered greens and thrice-cooked rooster chips! The greens were lovely and crunchy — in my opinion, no steak is complete without some green veg on the side so this was a must! The chips were fluffy yet crispy and seasoned heavily with salt, so much so it was almost on the verge of being too much. The best side was by far the whipped butter potatoes. I have never tasted mash so smooth in my entire life…I may as well have been eating buttery clouds they were just incredible.

Overall, every element of the entire meal was outstanding. They surpassed my expectations and 100% matched their promise of delivering an unforgettable meal. Everything from the food to the service, down to the wine and cocktails they served was just 10/10. It may be a pricier meal but I agree that they would make the perfect restaurant for celebrations and special occasions.
