The Grand Cafe
Over 50 years ago, at 20 North Bridge in Edinburgh, you would have found the Advertising and Noticed Department of the well-known Scotsman Newspaper. Now, this space has been transformed into The Grand Cafe which is one of the many establishments under the Scotsman Group.
Upon walking in, the interior of The Grand Cafe truly does give you the wow factor. The high ceilings and carefully considered decor had my expectations high. They recently launched a new brunch menu which is available until 11:45 am. On the menu, you will find some classic brunch dishes, options which are lighter/healthier and a few pastries/toast options too.
I tried the Full Scottish Breakfast for £14.95)/ This came with 1 pork sausage, 2 bits of bacon, haggis & black pudding, 1 potato scone, a roast tomato, mushrooms, hash brown, beans, eggs (your way — I chose fried) and toast.
Listing it out, there are a lot of elements that come with this dish but it seems a few too many to have each one cooked well. To name a few things wrong, the bacon was overcooked and didn’t have a pleasant texture, the mushrooms lacked flavour and the fried egg tasted as if it had been “fried” in a shallow pan full of water!
Not only was the food disappointing, especially when a fry-up costs nearly 15 quid, but the service was exceptionally awful. From the server looking as if he would have rather gone to war than seat us at a table and take our order to waiting 40mins+ for a coffee and orange juice, to say it could have been better would be a major understatement. It’s a real shame as they have such a wonderful spot in town and have just missed the mark — there are many other better brunch spots I’d recommend visiting instead.
