Burger with a dark shokupan bun from Sando

Sando

After initially operating as a pop-up restaurant towards the end of 2021, Sando has finally reopened and found their new home within Home Bar, located beside the King’s Theatre in Edinburgh. Fast forward to the 20th of October, 2022 they were finally back in action selling “sando’s” and sides!

Although they have released a new, updated menu since my visit (in all fairness they released it only days after I went…and sorry in advance if you like the look of what I ordered!), I’m going to take you through what Sando is all about and whether it’s worth paying them a visit.

Let me set the scene…if you haven’t already been to Home Bar for a drink, it’s basically a very small, local pub where you can grab a drink, watch some sports on tv and have a catch-up with your company of choice.

Once you’ve grabbed a seat (if you’re lucky), you can order a Sando from the bar. Their menu is small but always has a good range of items to choose from — none of this 10-page menu malarkey where it’s near impossible to choose a dish. Note: this place is also great if you’re veggie/vegan/gluten-free as most menu items can be made to your dietary requirements which we love to see!

Their menu is heavily inspired by Japanese/Korean dishes, featuring items like Karaage chicken, shokupan milk bread buns and plenty of togarashi seasoning.

I ended up going for two dishes to try: The ‘Ultimate Breakfast Sando’ for £9.95 and the ‘Birria Loaded Fries’ also for £9.95. These were both off the main menu but because they sounded so good I couldn’t help myself!

I think the shokupan milk bread bun on my sando might have been in the oven for a few minutes more than it needed. However, with that being said, it was still soft and fluffy so other than the colour being darker than expected it didn’t affect the meal whatsoever. The fillings in the sando were delicious (the more I use the word sando, the more I’m aware this is essentially just an Asian-inspired breakfast burger?!). The tender sausage patty and the oozy togarashi fried egg paired together to make the perfect bite. There has clearly been lots of thought put into what elements would make up this dish.

And the fries! When I ordered the Birria Loaded Fries it was mostly so I had a side to go with my burger. However, these were topped with the juiciest braised beef short rib. It was cooked so well I could have eaten a whole dish of it! A definite way to elevate your side game.

Overall a wonderful spot to try and I’m looking forward to keeping up with any new menus they release going forward. I predict they will have their own restaurant in the next year if they don’t stay within Home Bar. I really do hope that’s part of their short-term plans!
