Pain au chocolate from Patina

Patina

There’s certainly no shortage when it comes to restaurants and bakeries in Edinburgh, but I can guarantee ‘Patina’ is one you will want to move to the top of your list.

Being new to the Edinburgh scene, Patina have quickly stormed their way to the top and solidified their presence in the city. Sister to Kiln down in Newcastle, this exceptionally decorated restaurant, bar and bakery has stood out from the crowd by showcasing the craft and consideration that goes into each dish, pastry and sandwich on offer.

Only a short ride on the tram from the city centre, by day you will find Patina’s bakery and cafe area buzzing and full of life. I find the saying ‘the early bird catches the worm’ applies to this place as if you pop along later on in the day you may not have much choice left due to everything regularly selling out!

Offering sandwiches using homemade focaccia, wonderfully large pastries and bread options inspired by the owner’s trip to Copenhagen and delicious coffee, you won’t be struggling for choice. I’ve tried their Pain au Chocolat which was super flaky and each bite filled with chocolate. I also was intrigued by their ‘Lemon Meringue “cruffin”’, a hybrid of a croissant and a muffin filled with lemon curd and topped with gooey meringue. A messy eat but by far the most memorable pastry I’ve tried in Scotland… and one everybody should order at least once.

Speaking of memorable, the sandwiches Patina sells are nothing short of glorious. I’ve been back on numerous occasions specifically for their ‘Chicken Caesar sandwich’, it’s that good. They might be pricier than your standard sandwich at any regular cafe but quite simply, this isn’t your “regular cafe”. They are lovingly made using spongey focaccia bread with a golden, crispy exterior. That alone, in my opinion, justifies the price. I will say, that not only is the bread amazing, but each and every one is filled generously with whichever filling you choose.

As well as this, they do also offer a warm menu for both lunch and dinner where you can sit in the Art Deco-inspired restaurant area. The menu is inspired by Mediterranean cooking and they get extra points because everything is made from scratch. I enjoyed a 2-course meal from their lunch menu where I tried their oozy burrata with hazelnuts to start and the oxtail ragu pappardelle for my main.

I continue to be blown away by everything Patina has to offer, from the stunning interior to the expert bakers who make all of their incredible pastries each day.

Side note: you can even see some of their offering being made fresh whilst you sit in their cafe as the kitchen is fully on show and has been incorporated into the layout of the cafe/restaurant perfectly. A definite 5-star establishment worth travelling for…just be sure to arrive early!
