Mariachi
Mariachi is a family-run Mexican restaurant and can be found on the popular Victoria Street in Edinburgh’s old town.
Although the inside of their restaurant is vibrant with a buzzing atmosphere, you can also walk down their narrow alleyway and end up in their beautifully lit (and covered) beer garden. This would be the perfect place to sit and enjoy a few drinks and nibbles if the weather isn’t too cold…just be sure to bring a coat in case!
On their menu, you will be able to choose from a selection of Tex-Mex dishes. From tacos to burritos, Mariachi offers all of the standard dishes you would expect from this type of restaurant. Although they do have some larger main meals to choose from, the best way to eat here would be to order a bunch of small plates and dishes to share between the table.
Between two of us, we tried their:
- Shredded chicken tacos (£7.50)
- Slow-cooked pork shoulder tacos (£7.50)
- Freshly made guac & chips (£7.50)
- Elotes (£6.95)
- BBQ Chipotle Chicken Wings (£6.95)
At a Tex-Mex restaurant, one thing I always look forward to is starting the meal with tortilla chips and guacamole. The tortilla chips were ever so slightly warm from them being freshly cooked which was lovely but they could have used some salt. This comment also goes for the guacamole, which really was tasteless in comparison to other places in the city that offer fresh guac.
All of the dishes were nice but the standout was by far the pork shoulder tacos. The meat was bursting with flavour – so much so that I wish I ordered two of this dish. Sadly this wasn’t the same for the chicken tacos as they were lacking in flavour for me. This ended up being a running theme throughout the meal so if you’re a fussy eater or like your food more on the plain side then Mariachi would be a great place for you. That’s not to say all of their offering is bland though!
However, if you’re planning on going for the drinks then you’re in for a treat. As well as having a great selection of Mexican beers and tequila, they also have a decent list of cocktails too. I tried their spicy margarita which was bloody lovely. Intrigued by the name, I also tried their Bulldog Margarita. This is basically a lime margarita which comes in a skull glass and is topped with an upside-down corona. This was a bit of a gimmick and didn’t taste amazing as the corona and margarita didn’t mix well. So maybe stick to just the beer or margarita on its own!
Overall, considering the restaurant is on Victoria Street, the pricing wasn’t too bad, the atmosphere was super relaxed yet buzzing at the same time and the food was nice. A great wee spot to nip in for drinks and a small plate if you’re passing by.
