Small pink bento cake in a krema branded takeaway box

Krema Bakehouse

Just over a year ago on the 5th of March 2022, Krema Bakehouse opened their pastry shop at the foot of Leith Walk in Edinburgh.

Before you even enter Krema’s front doors, you’ll be hit with some sweet and wonderful smells wafting over from where everything is made in-house daily. Its minimal design and open plan setting make it easy on the eye (and great for those of you who like to snap your food on Instagram like me!) and they sell a wide variety of goodies with the likes of pastries, tray bakes, cakes and their signature item, brioche!

After following them on social media, I noticed that they had started selling bento cakes which are currently going viral on platforms like TikTok, Instagram and Pinterest. Thes e are basically small “lunchbox” sized cakes which originated in South Korea and are packaged and eaten inside takeout boxes.

Once I saw this, my mission was a go! Full transparency, once Krema Bakehouse saw I was looking to try one of these, they reached out and offered to gift me one in return for my thoughts and although it goes without saying on my platforms, all opinions are honest and my own.

You will start by choosing what flavour you would like. They sent me a list of some of their most popular flavours to choose from. I opted for a vanilla cake with a strawberry filling which if you ask me is unwatched! Then on to the fun bit — the design! You can ask for specific designs and send reference photos or leave the creative up to the team in the bakehouse. My exact request was for “something summery (floral/food) but for the most part, I let the decorators work their magic and boy did they do just that.

I was so excited when I opened the cake box after collecting it from the bakery. The cake was pink all over with some beautiful, delicate cherries piped on top. I truly was super impressed with what the team at Krema had come up with and it fit the brief I asked for perfectly…it’s almost as if they read my mind and knew I loved the colour pink.

The butter cream was smooth and sweet, exactly what it should be. There was a fair amount of icing to cake ratio due to the size of the bento cake so it maybe wouldn’t be great for those of you who don’t have a sweet tooth. However, if you do, you’re in for a treat! I can see these making the perfect gift for super small parties or family dinner birthdays where it can be shared between 2-4 people. This will 100% save leftovers and mean all the cake can be eaten fresh on the day of or the day after collection.

I did also pick up some of their signature brioches whilst I was in the shop. I went for the Snickerdoodle and pistachio as I had already clocked these two on the way into the shop — having them on display at the window really worked its magic. Both were incredibly soft and tasty and not to mention huge! I still can’t quite believe how big they were and how much eating was in each one. Also, the amount of flavour they were able to work into the brioches was extremely impressive! Out of the two, the pistachio was my favourite and I’d highly suggest picking one up to try if you pass by.

Overall, I think Krema Bakehouse is a great new independent bakery and Leith is lucky to have it as a new addition. The bento cakes are 100% a must-try and if you’ve got a sweet tooth like me, then this place will not disappoint.
