Sunday roast plate

Kenmuir Arms

Sunday’s are for one thing only…a roast. And this time it’s a Sunday roast from the Kenmuir Arms hotel.

The Kenmuir Arms is a small hotel in New Luce, a beautiful and scenic region only nine miles from Stranraer in Dumfries and Galloway. Run by chef Christopher Dougan, their aim is to showcase the best Scottish fayre and make use of organic, under-utilised produce from local suppliers.

The hotel has a cosy yet modern feel to it and the restaurant offers the most wonderful view of the Water of Luce. If the big windows aren’t enough to soak in the scenic views, then you can take a walk down the fairy-lit stairs before or after your meal. On your walk, you’ll also be able to see their allotment which looked as if it were in progress at the time of my visit.

Although the Kenmuir Arms’ main offering is an 8-course tasting menu, they do also have an a la carte menu for you to choose from. However, on my visit, I was there specifically to try their Sunday lunch menu which runs from 12:30-5pm.

Skipping out on a starter, I went straight in for a main where I chose ‘The King of Wishful Thinking’. This came with a generous amount of roast beef, a small dollop of mash, a beautifully golden Yorkshire pudding, a dish of seasonal vegetables to share between two and a small beaker of gravy each.

The menu was vague on what would come with the roast so we also ended up ordering a portion of mashed potatoes to share between two people. However, I’m very glad we did as despite not looking overly appetising when it was served, the potatoes were so buttery and creamy — just delicious.

Aside from the mash, the whole roast was very delicious, from the tender, perfectly cooked beef to the fresh seasonal vegetables from Barsolus Produce, a local fruit a vegetable shop in Stranraer.

With the prices being on the higher end in comparison to other restaurants in the area, my only comments would be that the service was a tad lacklustre and the pricing was also rather confusing. With different prices on their website, the menu and on our final bill, it was difficult to figure out how much their roast was priced at.

Despite this, it was definitely not the be-all and end-all considering the food was great, and it may just be a teething issue with the restaurant being newly opened. Overall, it is a great place to visit with a wonderful view if you’re ever in the area. Perhaps you’re doing the Southern Upland Way, then a stay and meal here would be the perfect pit stop and would be sure to fuel the next leg of your walk.

It’s also worth noting that the Kenmuir Arms is dog-friendly, but only in the snug bar, and at the time of writing this they do not offer vegan options and they do not cater for dairy, egg, mushroom or allium allergies or personal dislikes.
