Roast beef Sunday roast from Hawksmoor

Hawksmoor

Let me guess…you’ve Googled where to find the best Sunday roast in Edinburgh and most of the searches have led you to Hawksmoor? Or maybe you just stumbled across this blog post. Either way, let me take you through what to expect if you do end up booking yourself in for a Sunday treat.

Hawksmoor is a steak restaurant with branches in Edinburgh, London, Manchester, Liverpool, Dublin and New York. They’re located in the heart of the city in a building which used to be a banking hall. It’s really wonderful to see old elements from the bank dotted around and blended into the impressive restaurant it is today.

They recently updated their Sunday Roast menu which has two options to choose from. You can either pick from a whole range of different cuts which you will find inside the restaurant on the blackboards dotted around or you can go for the Roast Beef option like me! This comes with beef-dripping potatoes, a Yorkshire pudding, roasted carrots, buttered greens, roasted garlic and a bone marrow gravy.

Whilst ordering, the server asked if I would like the roast beef “pink” or “brown” which I thought was a very odd way of asking how I’d like the meat cooked. I opted for “pink” and was glad to see the beef came out medium-rare and tender as can be — perfection. In fact, the whole meal was nothing short of perfection. The roast potatoes were fluffy yet crispy and the Yorkshire pudding was golden brown on the outside and soft on the inside.

To share between two people, we did also opt for a side of cauliflower cheese between us. This was good — I loved the crispy topping — although I wouldn’t say the dish was anything to rave about for an extra £7. I’d recommend trying one of their other side dishes instead if you are going to get some extras to share.

One thing I do want to rave about is the cocktails! There were plenty of cocktails and wines to choose from but I ended up going for the “Reformed Pornstar”. All cocktails were priced around £12-15 which is pretty pricey for the size of the drink but for the creativity and taste I would happily pay for another (or two!) on my next visit.

Hawksmoor feels like it’s in a grey zone between being a steakhouse and a fine dining restaurant and is priced accordingly. The staff were all lovely but if you are someone who is fussy about staff wearing trainers and not being dressed for fine dining then definitely give this one a miss. Overall though, I’d say it’s a lovely place to visit for a cracking Sunday roast.
