El Perro Negro
If you’re lucky enough to have visited El Perro Negro, you’ll know just how exciting this collaboration is for Porty Vault in Portobello, Edinburgh.
A little bit of background for both El Perro Negro and Port Vault/Vault City Brewing:
El Perro Negro
El Perro Negro is a burger joint that started its journey in Glasgow. Since opening, they have since expanded to Edinburgh securing a spot at Bonnie and Wild in the St James Quarter.
In both venues they offer a pretty limited menu, honing in what they do and the burgers they sell. These include your standard burgers as well as a few rogue options with fun ingredients such as bone marrow butter and black pudding.
They do also offer at least one vegetarian and vegan option at each venue too, although if most of the party has this diet then I probably wouldn’t put El Perro Negro at the top of your ‘to-go’ list.
Porty Vault/Vault City Brewing
Porty Vault is a taproom that can be found only a stone’s throw away from Portobello Beach in Edinburgh. It’s a lovely little spot with limited seating and a relaxed atmosphere…the perfect hangout spot!
They serve an impressive amount of craft beers that are made in the Vault City Brewing Brewery just a few minutes along the road. If local lagers and pale ales aren’t your thing, they also sell wine, spirits, cocktails and soft drinks.
So, if you haven’t gathered from the above, this collab is what dreams are made of. Beer and burgers, what more could you want? From today (June 30th 2023), Port Vault have a pop-up kitchen hosting El Perro Negro. This will initially be for three months so time is of the essence.
I headed over to Portobello to try the award-winning burgers, sample some beers and see what the pop-up is all about. From this, I’ve gathered that the burgers aren’t just burgers, but the best of the best! With a limited menu, you’ll be sure to find an option you love. If you don’t want to take my word for how good the burgers are then just know that they won the ‘National Burger Award 2021’ which is pretty impressive.
I tried ‘Porty Black Dog’ which comes in at £12.50 and is packed with two smashed patties, double cheese, bone marrow butter, Ramsay’s black pudding, onions, pickles and burger sauce. The meat was juicy and flavoursome, the bun was soft yet perfectly toasted and each element worked its magic on my taste buds.
They also have a Porty Vault exclusive burger called the ‘Porty Summer Smash’. This burger will set you back £11 and has two double patties, double cheese, house pickles, onions, tomatoes, lettuce and burger sauce. You can also add Ramsay’s bacon for an extra £1!
To go along with these incredible burgers, I also shared their chilli cheese fries (£8) between the two of us. This is basically what the name suggests — fries topped with chilli, cheese and garnishes with a sour cream dressing, onions and pickles. It was a nice portion size and certainly did the trick.
Considering this pop-up is only set to be around for the summer, if you love yourself a great burger and nice beer then you’ll be missing out if you don’t head over to Porty Vault before it’s gone. That being said, if you’re not a massive beer drinker like myself, they also have nice cocktails on tap such as the mango margarita I tried.
