Dizzy Izzy’s
One of the newest bars on the block and arguably the most punk-rock place in the city, Dizzy Izzy’s, has recently launched their food menu. You’ll find them at Bristo Place in Edinburgh serving up smash burgers with a side of tequila all week long.
No, but seriously, this awesome rock and roll bar is kitted out with a swanky Harley Davidson motorbike in the window, which will surely lure you in if the neon lights and cracking music don’t. Whether you’d like a spot at the bar, a cosy nook in the corner or your bog standard table, there’s an area for everyone.
Aside from serving up tequila shooters and a whole dose of cocktails (the tequila sunrise I ordered was great!), Dizzy Izzy’s recently started focusing on selling smash burgers. Although these are the main focus, they do also have dirty fries, wings, nachos and other small sides on the menu.
All of the burgers can be ordered on their own or as a combo meal. In my opinion, they had a decent selection to choose from with a great variation in flavour combos — not just your basic cheeseburger like some bars offer. The burger that caught my eye was the ‘Highland Coo’. This comes with a smashed patty, haggis, a hash brown and their house tomato jam. If that wasn’t enough, it also came with a tub of peppercorn sauce on the side.
I had really high hopes for the burger after seeing images on their Instagram page. However, although it wasn’t bad, it wasn’t very memorable. The patties were nice but the texture of it all was very same-y. Basically, a crunchy element wouldn’t go a miss. The sauce also lacked flavour. Presuming this was meant to be the stand-out element for the burger, I’d expect the sauce to be packed with peppercorn and super creamy.
I must say, the burger my partner got, ‘Miss Piggy’, looked much better than mine (minus the questionable-looking sauce). His was topped with pulled pork, American cheese, apple slaw, pickles and BBQ sauce.
On the side, we also shared a side of halloumi fries which came with a chilli jam. These were…nice! The cheese was cooked well and the sauce had a kick to it. My only comment is that the sauce tasted more like a hot sauce than a jam!
To conclude, Dizzy Izzy’s is probably not somewhere that would be at the top of my list to go specifically for food. However, the bar was cool inside and something different for Edinburgh. If I was there for drinks, I would happily order a dish or two.
