Chop House
For the steak lovers in, around or simply visiting Edinburgh, Chop House should be a restaurant on your radar. Loved by the locals for not only its central location and the unique restaurant layout, but also the quality of their meat. What I’m trying to say is you know you’re in for a great meal each time you visit.
You can find them at the Market Street arches only a short walk (around 5 minutes…if even!) from Waverly Train Station — just make sure to leave the station from the side exit.
For starters we shared the ‘Fried chicken wings’ which were fried and then tossed in hot chilli and garlic sauce. The second dish of choice which was recommended to us by the server was the ‘Sticky BBQ Wings’. These were, aside from the steak, a stand-out from the whole dinner. The portion size was monstrous, especially if you’re planning on chowing down on a huge steak right after, with each rib having plenty of meat. There’s nothing worse than a rib with barely any meat on it!
And for the star of the show, we actually ordered one of the sharing cuts they have to offer. There’s three to choose from (chateaubriand, porterhouse and tomahawk) and each comes with two sauces of your choice. We went for the porterhouse cut which was 800g and had LOTS of eating in it. The beef is butchered, dry aged for a minimum of 35 days before being cooked over coals. And get this…it’s all done in-house. Amazing!
The steak was meaty, tender, juicy and cooked medium rare as ordered with a nice crust on it – everything you could probably desire in steak. I’d go as far to say it’s one of the best steaks I’ve had in Edinburgh. Ever. The two sauces we chose were the chimichurri and the peppercorn, two absolute classics that didn’t let us down.
On the side we got the chilli and lemon broccolini and a portion of hand cut chips. The broccolini packed a punch so if you can’t handle the heat maybe give these a miss. However, if you like spicy, these were full of flavour and complimented the steak well. The chips were chips! Not got much more to add on this except they were decently chunky.
They’ve also got a great selection of cocktails to choose from. Whether you prefer something more sour/sharp, sweet or more strong and boozy, there’s plenty of options that will make your meal even better. My love for spicy margs is no secret so when I saw the scotch bonnet margarita on the first page of the menu I already knew that would be my drink of choice for the evening.
They made this using Cazadores Blanco Tequila, which is perfect for tequila cocktails as it has a nice sweet edge to it. This paired with the lime, Cointreau and hot chilli cordial made for the perfect balance of sweet, sour and spicy.
Also pictured is the mojito royale which is simply a regular mojito topped with prosecco.
An absolute treat of a meal and a spot I’d highly recommend if you’re in the mood for a steak date in Edinburgh’s city centre.
