Ante
From the team behind Spry Wines which you’ll find only a short walk from the St James Quarter, Edinburgh has gained a new coffee shop and bakery downstairs called Ante.
Like their sister wine bar and restaurant upstairs, the venue is minimal and understated. After walking down the stairs and through the entrance, you’re met with the countertop that should be filled with pastries and other goodies if you arrive at the right time. However, if you’re not an early bird like myself, there may be slim pickings. They do also sell hot food (which I was nearing the cut-off time for, of course) but once I’ve been back to try it, I’ll be sure to update you on whether it’s good or not!
As for the pastries, all that was left for me to pick from was their chocolate chip cookies or a twice-baked mocha bun (£5.50). None of the two would be my usual choice but I ended up choosing their mocha bun which I took to their outdoor seating with a flat white coffee.
Well…that’s not entirely the truth. The staff let me go and get settled into a seat of my choice outside and once the coffee was ready they brought that out to me alongside the pastry and some cutlery.
The coffee was lovely (the latte art was appreciated as always!) and the pastry was even better. It worked out for the best trying something I wouldn’t have probably opted for before. It was crispy and filled with what I could only imagine was Bare Bones chocolate, considering they seem to use this in lots of their other bakes.
Ante was a real delight. It’s a great wee pick-me-up spot if you’re looking to stop off for some delicious treats, coffee and a bout of people-watching.
P.S. Don’t forget to come back soon once I have the lowdown on whether the hot food is worth the trip too…although I have a feeling it will be!
