Sweet Bella’s
Tucked away in Corstorphine, a popular residential suburb in Edinburgh, you’ll find Scotland’s smallest bakery…Sweet Bella’s.
‘The Wee Shop’, where the bakery resides, is owned by the Corstorphine Trust. It has been around for over 100 years and measures a mere 1 meter wide and 2 meters long! So…if you don’t blink on your way by, you can stop for some sweet treats.
Sweet Bella’s, previously known as ‘Sarah Bakes’, was started only a few years ago during lockdown in 2020. She kicked off her business by making cakes and cupcakes from her own home.
With the shop being the size that it is (very small!), there is only a limited amount of space, therefore limiting what they can sell. With that being said, on my visit, there was a selection of cupcakes, cookies and tray bakes to choose from.
I was drawn in by her cupcakes, displayed in the window, as the flavours all looked amazing. I ended up purchasing three different flavours:
- Eton mess
- Banoffee
- Chocolate Caramel
The cupcakes were sweet, soft and definitely felt like a treat. They had quite a lot of icing on top which is perfect for those with a sweet tooth. However, if that’s not for you then you can just take some off. As well as being iced with a generous amount of buttercream, they were decorated beautifully and also packed with various fillings, different for each flavour.
I also wanted to try one of her tray bakes so I bought a slice of Biscoff rocky road. This was a super chunky slab so definitely enough bang for your buck and again, super tasty and incredibly indulgent.
It truly is a lovely “wee” spot to try out if you’re in the area and I’m always for supporting new, local businesses. Although it is worth noting there really is not a lot of choice, especially for vegans (I didn’t see any vegan options). Keep an eye out the next time you are passing through Corstorphine and try to spot it — they’re currently open Thursday-Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm.
