Revolution
Revolution, also known as ‘Revs’, isn’t somewhere I’d usually think to go for food. However, even though you might know them for having a nice selection of reasonably priced cocktails, they have just released their new food menu. This consists of a range of small/sharing plates, pizzas, burgers and some other mains too.
I visited their Edinburgh branch and with the upstairs being closed off (possibly for renovations?), we followed the neon sign and headed downstairs.
Kitted out with plenty of tables/booths and a bar, we were seated in one of the big booths. Not the comfiest seating for a meal – it was so tall our feet were quite literally dangling (a first for my boyfriend considering he’s 6’3!). Despite enjoying the greenery, fairy lights & disco balls dotted around, I couldn’t help but notice the drink stains across the seats…eep! It was a shame because I could see the vision they were going for but couldn’t get past feeling like I was sitting in a sticky nightclub but in daylight.
We ended up getting a cocktail each: a mojito and a pornstar martini (basic bitch alert, sorry!). Both were lovely so no complaints there, nothing I’d particularly rave about though. In my opinion, you can’t really go terribly wrong with any of Revolution’s cocktails, I’ve tried plenty over the years and they’re always decent enough for the price!
Onto the food…I tried the ‘Buffalo Chicken’ burger which for £12.50 comes with a side of fries or salad and a portion of coleslaw. I did also add a side of onion rings too for an extra £1. Chicken breast is notoriously hard to cook perfectly and sadly on this occasion it was a little dry on the outside where the meat was thinner. The middle was cooked just fine though. The franks hot sauce, blue cheese sauce and lettuce helped the dryness and were delicious together…you can’t beat this classic combo!
There were supposed to be pickles on there too but I don’t recall seeing or tasting any so I’m not sure what was going on there. Either way, it was a pretty average burger for the price point. The one element I wasn’t keen on at all was the coleslaw! As a coleslaw lover, they were pretty stingy with how much they gave and gladly so because it lacked flavour – it tasted like it had been sitting out for a while and wasn’t freshly made.
Joe’s burger was the star of the show in this meal. He ordered ‘The Big BBQ Smoke King’ which was served in a dome of smoke. At first, I thought it was a bit gimmicky (or a lot a bit) but I tasted a bite of his meal and it had subtly impacted the taste of the burger in a good way which was really interesting. Once the smoke show was over, this mammoth burger came with two thick beef burgers, bacon, cheese, BBQ sauce, onion rings, lettuce & rev’s relish. For £15.50, this had a fair bit of eating in it and also came with either a side of fries or salad and coleslaw.
Overall, the smoke king burger was really fun and made the meal more exciting. If you’re going to visit Revolution for drinks and want a bite to eat, definitely get something to try whilst you’re there. However, I wouldn’t suggest going out of your way to specifically visit for the food – there are many places dotted around Edinburgh that serve better burgers you’d rather spend your money on.
