Thirty Knots
In December 2022, ‘Buzzworks’ added another venue to its portfolio with Thirty Knots opening its doors in South Queensferry. Selling itself as “a place to gather by the sea”, this contemporary pub and restaurant offer one of the most spectacular views in Edinburgh with the Three Bridges right on their doorstep.
It may be a little journey from the usual city centre joints but trust me when I say the food is worth travelling for. Using fresh produce from local suppliers, they have curated an exciting traditional pub menu with a modern twist. They also have an impressive wine list to choose from to enjoy with your lunch or dinner.
The prices here are definitely a little higher than your usual pub so I had quite high expectations before the food came out. With that being said, it wasn’t hard to find a dish as there were plenty of dishes on the menu that caught my eye.
Note: the images in this blog post are from two separate visits.
To start, we got the salt and chilli squid to share which came with a side of sweet and sour nuoc cham dip. Being right beside the ocean, they really needed to have the freshest seafood available and I can confidently say they nailed that aspect. It was also cooked to perfection with the batter being light yet crispy, making each bite perfect!
Now let me shine a light on the two stars of the show: the king rib supper and the Sunday roast. On my first visit, I tried the king rib supper which is melt-in-your-mouth, char sui glazed, slow-cooked pork on a bed of fries. As if that’s not tasty enough on its own there is tempura batter sprinkled on top for an added crunch, pickled onions and a side of drool-worthy katsu ketchup (I seriously need the recipe for this because it was just that good)!
On my second time around I visited on a Sunday so it would have been rude to not order a roast from their specials menu. I opted for the roast beef which came cooked medium-rare and was tender as can be. This came with two types of potatoes: mashed and roasted, a chunky homemade Yorkshire pudding, roasted carrots, parsnips and broccoli all topped with a rich and glossy gravy drizzled all over.
For the table on both occasions, we ordered a side of Caesar salad. In my opinion, it’s hard to truly mess this dish up but the sauce was great, the lettuce was crispy and it was topped with crunch croutons, a healthy serving of parmesan and plenty of sardines (I can’t lie I took these off because I’m not a fan).
Overall, such a wonderful spot that I urge everyone to try it if they get the chance. I can already tell that during the warmer seasons, the outside beer garden will be absolutely buzzing — the outside dining area is also dog-friendly too! One of my favourite places of the year so far and the king rib supper alone should NOT be slept on!
