Earl’s Burger Co.
After initially starting off as a sandwich joint, in the May of 2022, Earl’s Burger Co. decided to switch up their offering and start focusing on selling high-quality burgers, hog dogs, chicken and shakes!
You’ll find them down in the lively neighbourhood of Stockbridge which I absolutely love — I’m biased because I lived there for a good few years!
Walking into Earl’s, you’ll likely see a big smile on the face of who’s behind the checkout. There isn’t much seating, maybe around three tables and a bench for those of you who like to people-watch at the winder (guilty!).
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…I LOVE smaller menus. The way I see it is that the kitchen can hone in on what they do best and make sure every dish being served is top-notch. So yeah, I appreciate the Earl’s menu being on the smaller side — it makes the decision ever so slightly easier too.
I was struggling to see the actual menu in the restaurant because I forgot my glasses (whoops!) so I ended up going with a recommendation from the server. This lead me to order the ‘5 on it’ burger which came with crispy fried chicken, smoked pancetta bacon, American cheese, pickles, Carolina BBQ sauce…essentially your basic BBQ burger. I also did order a side of chilli cheese curly fries. These used to be done using waffle fries so I was somewhat gutted when I realised they had changed it up to be curly fries…but I’ll live!
When it first came out I was curious to see if the chicken was going to be dry and overcooked based on how it looked. Much to my delight, I was wrong because it was juicy on the inside with a lovely, crunchy exterior. The burger as a whole was all great. It had just the right amount of each filling and as expected with it being a classic burger, worked well together.
The chilli cheese fries also came out and were a much larger portion than I was expecting. Honestly, maybe would have been better to either get this on its own or share it between two (unless you’re very hungry — no judgement here!). Upon reflection, they were basically the same price as the burgers so that was definitely an oversight from me.
Do I think Earl’s offers the best burger in Edinburgh? No. But is it up there? For sure. After trying it, it’s somewhere I’d revisit if I’m in or around Stockbridge and in need of some nice and decently-priced grub.
