Dulse
If you are in the Edinburgh food scene and haven’t heard about Dulse, then you must have been living under a rock!
Dulse is a two-story seafood restaurant in the centre of Edinburgh’s city centre and is part of the Dean Banks group. Downstairs (when you walk in) they have a gorgeous wine and cocktail bar but if you’re a foodie then upstairs is where you want to be.
With an aim to always showcase the best of Scottish seafood, I went along to try their new lunch menu that has just launched. For £29pp you can get three courses with the option to add on extra snacks and sides for an additional price.
The menu is super concise (each course only has two options) which I LOVE. Not only does this make the decision easier for me, but it also solidifies the fact that they considered each dish carefully to make sure they all work together in harmony and that they will be able to execute them all perfectly…or so I’d hope!
One thing about me is I can’t say no to a snack. The two snack options available when I visited were:
- Sourdough with butter – This was a generous portion for only £5.50! The bread came out warm alongside whipped pickled onion butter which was all tasty, especially the butter!!
- Oysters with seasonal dressing options – These are a MUST order in you ask me. Decent sized oysters and the dressing options I tried were all top notch.
The dish I was most looking forward to from the whole menu was the West coast mussels in a Thai red curry broth. It’s safe to say didn’t only live up to my expectations but also exceeded them. The depth of flavour in the broth was out of this world and was an unreal combo with the mussels.
After starting off the meal on a high, the rest of the lunch kept the momentum going. The pan roasted coley dish was a stunning dish that truly did as Dulse aim to do…showcase the best of Scottish seafood! The coley came with surf clams, crayfish in a roe veloute. To go along side this we also shared a side of potatoes which were the perfect accompaniment. This was a generous portion size so unless you’re super hungry then I’d recommend sharing this.
…and the only correct way to end a meal? An affogato. I don’t have too many thoughts and opinions on this because to be quite frank it is just some coffee and ice cream. It was nice though!
Out of all of the places I’ve dined for lunch recently, this is by far one of the more memorable meals that I’ve had. I highly suggest you go and try.
