Brett
Strap yourself in to hear and see all things Brett because this place is a cracker!
Brett is a restaurant and wine bar in the West end of Glasgow that not only has incredible dishes but also an impressive list of cocktails and wine.
The place as a whole is not overly big but the atmosphere is what I would class as perfect — a nice buzz but not overly loud. Because of this, before we even get to the food and drink, I’d go back just for a drink.
I sat on the ground level (there’s also an upstairs section!) where you get the watch the team in action preparing and finishing off each dish as they go out.
Because I was there for their lunch menu and wasn’t overly hungry, I started off with one of their cocktails that you can actually buy by the bottle to take home…the spicy margarita. Although not the best I’ve ever had, probably because I presume it wasn’t made when ordered and was simply just poured from a pre-made batch, it was still excellent. It packed a punch but wasn’t overly spicy.
As a starter, I then got the bread to share between two. This came as two giant chunks (you get half of one large slice each) alongside some whipped chicken fat butter. Now, for me, the best part about bread as a snack is the creative butter combos that are usually served alongside it. The chicken fat butter was unique to me and elevated the bread into a memorable snack.
I then skipped the starters (shocking!!) and went straight onto the mains. The menu is relatively vague but the dish that caught my eye was the ‘beef sirloin & asparagus’. When I tell you this plate of food felt like spring in a dish I am not joking! The mixture of the earthy white and green asparagus, the meaty steak and tangy yuzu & asparagus puree was a match made in heaven. The main thing I noticed (and loved) about this course was that neither the steak, asparagus or puree overpowered each other.
Also pictured is the dish ‘celeriac & morels’. I didn’t try this but the plating was very enticing. My only comment would be that this was the only vegetarian dish that my friend was able to order — luckily it was a good one.
When ordering, the one dish we couldn’t skip over was the side of ’Brett dauphinoise’. These rich and creamy potatoes paired perfectly with both our mains. By far a standout of the whole meal and a must-order if you go.
This place is a true gem. The prices are high but for the quality of the food and service you get what you pay for. Next time I’m going to have to buy some of their wine/cocktails to take home…
