The Raeburn
’Tis the season of cosy Sunday roasts and this week I travelled along to ‘The Raeburn’ in Stockbridge, Edinburgh. This beautifully old building is nuzzled into the corner of Inverleith Park and after initially being a family home, it has since converted into a well-known boutique hotel.
You may have walked by on a rare sunny day in Scotland and seen the outside area buzzing with locals enjoying a drink, but I want to take a moment to appreciate how stunning the restaurant interior is. Classy and elegant, yet still full of life, this is no doubt the perfect setting to enjoy a Sunday roast.

Their menu is small, as it should be in my opinion, with only three options for the starters, mains, sides and desserts. They have a deal where you can get 2 courses for £22 and three for £27 — pretty standard pricing compared to other Sunday roast menus nearby.
We didn’t end up making use of their deals and ordered only the roast. It was great to see a vegan/vegetarian menu and the pan-roasted chicken sounded good, but ‘today’s roast’ was calling my name. When I visited, they had roast beef on the menu. This came with a generous amount of meat, roast potatoes, a Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, vegetables and gravy.

Only two parts of this meal were enjoyable — the roast beef and the stuffing. Other than that, the Yorkie was soft like a marshmallow and the vegetables were not far from being raw. Really disappointing actually!
We also shared a side of cauliflower pudding which cost £4. Sadly this was a let down too with the cauliflower being hard as a brick, just like the broccoli. The cheese sauce which smothered the veg also was not worth mentioning as it lacked any cheese flavour whatsoever.

So, despite being a gorgeous venue with very attentive staff, this Sunday roast from the Raeburn was a flop and I don’t recommend wasting your money. However, I will say it’s a lovely wee spot to enjoy a drink or two!
